What suggestions do you have to improve Learning Suite?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.

  1. Disable notifications for specific chain emails

You should be able to mute notifications on specific email threads. This way, students can silence uninteresting email threads, so that when they get a notification they can have higher confidence that it will be relevant to them.

  2. Allow students to modify fonts in open responses on exams

When writing an exam question I can use different fonts and modify those fonts (bold, italics, underline, etc) but students cannot do the same in their responses. It would be helpful to me if they could use those fonts in their responses.

  3. Create/Use better Assignment order in grader

What determines the order of the assignments in the drop-down menu in BYU Grades > scoring? The assignments don't seem to have any particular order (in fact, it appears quite random) and it makes for selecting an assignment from that list quite a pain for instructors and TAs.

Please look into coming up with some better way to display those assignments - perhaps by the same categories that we use to make them and by their due dates.

  4. Text columns in gradebook

Gradebook needs the ability to have columns for text so that we can enter assignment numbers, group names, etc into the gradebook for the ease of professors and students to grade. For example, for some assignments I just want a check mark to tell me it has been turned in (like the class Ferpa form). I don't want a grade for it, but a way to visually see who has completed something and who has not when there are no points assigned to it. Currently I have to use numbers and the students freak out because those numbers (even if…

  6. Add textual columns into GB (similar to column in GB for unique numerical id)

In order to mark students who have disabilities or indicate a group, or other textual information by student there needs to be a textual column that teachers can add.

  7. Show confirmation dialog before exam submission

When you reach the last question on an exam, the "Finish and Submit" button looks a lot like the "Continue" button, and is in the same location. If you're going quickly, it's easy to click "Finish and Submit" thinking you are just going to the next question. This is a problem if you wanted to go back and review previous questions. A confirmation dialog would allow you to go back if you clicked "Finish and Submit" by mistake.

  8. Create a Single Student view for TAs/Professors to review grades with a student

Currently it seems possible to only view all students' grades simultaneously which makes it difficult to review grades with an instructor/TA. You either work off of your computer where changes can't be made or you stand to the side as the professor/TA views it on their screen. It would be nice if they could just click into a student and see the grades of that student.

This would likely look very similar to the view that a student has when viewing their own grades. This answers the "How have I been doing?" question. Additionally, it should be able to answer…

  10. Remove the "compare yourself to other students in class" function.

I recently learned, to my horror, that LS has a default setting to let students see their score in comparison to other students (as opposed to tracking their own performance). That's bad enough (a comparison culture is unhealthy), but then LS also tells them things like "you're the best in class" or "you're the worst in class - better luck next time." I cannot say how badly this has gone for students (once they let me know it was happening!). I can turn it off, but I have to remember to do that each semester. Please, either remove it, or…

  12. Set Open/Due Times to End/Start of Class

Allow instructors to set start and end times for a class and give them the options to (1) set the class end time as the default open time for all assignments/exams and (2) set the class start time as the default due/close time for all assignments/exams; then on individual assignments/exams, include the options to (3) set it to open at the end of class and (4) set it to be due/close at the start of class.

  13. Don't lock message replies at end of semester

Today is the first day of classes for the 2014 Spring Term. However, I am still grading 2014 Winter Term, and grades are not due for another few days. Because the term is technically "over", the messages in 2014 Winter Term are "locked" so that I cannot reply to students. This is happening during the critical time when students are sending me messages about their final grades.

Please don't lock any messages for any terms. This is not a feature, it is a bug.

If you insist on locking messages, for some reason, at least wait until 2 weeks after…

  14. Schedule needs option to turn holidays on or off

For study abroad programs (or other courses) that do not follow American holidays, it would be helpful to be able to turn those holidays off in the course schedule. In some instances, study abroad programs hold classes on American holidays, but the Learning Suite schedule doesn't currently allow for content to be put into that space.

  17. Link to another website-add area for professor provide instructions or other text

When a new course is created an the option is to use Learning Suite or to input the web address that will take students outside of Learning Suite, it would be helpful if there was a space for the professor to provide instructions about that link. Currently, a teacher can only input the link without providing any contextual clues.

  19. How can I submit a student paper for them? (to run it through Turnitin)?

How can I submit a student paper for them? Or, really, how can I run their paper through Turnitin without it having been submitted by the student? Such as in a situation where they were unable to access Learning Suite and emailed me their paper.

  20. Give instructors the ability to open an exam for someone to take a second time, either in an exception, or otherwise.

Curently there is no way for instructors to let a student take an exam again if there is a reason to do so. LS could program an exception option, or some other way of re-opening the exam for a student so they can take it again.
